President Honglim Ryu visited UC Berkeley on Thursday, June 8, 2023, for a fruitful meeting with Chancellor Carol Chirst. The primary focus of the meeting was to explore effective measures to enhance student exchanges between SNU and UC Berkeley. In addition, both leaders discussed different approaches in strengthening the core curriculum based on liberal arts education. Other topics included strategies for enhancing educational programs in data science and AI. While the new Department of Advanced Convergence Studies is scheduled to launch at SNU in 2025, UC Berkeley has recently established an independent college solely dedicated to Computing, Data Science & Society. Both leaders agreed that the comparison of two divisions was quite fruitful.
Along with President Ryu, the following administrators from both universities were present at the meeting: Dr. Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, Vice Provost for Academic
Planning & Senior International Officer at UC Berkeley, Dr. Seung Ah Theresa Cho, Vice President of International Affairs at SNU, and Dr. Kihyeon Kim and Dr. Joonhwan Lee representing the SNU Foundation.
Following the visit, President Honglim Ryu participated in the 32nd SNU Alumni Association in the USA Annual Meeting held in Las Vegas. He delivered a keynote speech on "The Future of Universities and Innovative Strategies for SNU."
The event provided an excellent opportunity for engaging with the alumni community in North America.
